I am extremely happy to announce that I have recently completed two new book projects, both about the TV show, FRIENDS! Here’s all you need to know…
Several years ago, I sent a list of possible book subjects to my editor at Running Press. We spoke about several possibilities (including a FRIENDS project), and then The Little Book of Marilyn came along and I got to work on that… Around April or May of this year, my editor messaged to say that because FRIENDS has become even more popular over the last year or so, Running Press would be publishing some projects. The first would be a mini A-Z with trivia game, and would I like to write it?! After I’d finished jumping up and down, I of course emailed my editor and confirmed that yes, I’d be more than happy to tackle the book and the trivia game!
I was so excited to be asked to write the A-Z and got to work immediately. Then I went on holiday and several days into the trip, my editor wrote to tell me that this would be an official product, licensed by Warner Bros! Needless to say, I almost fainted on the spot and was absolutely ecstatic that not only was I writing a FRIENDS project, but it would be recognised as being authorised and official!!
A few weeks later, my editor messaged again, this time to ask if I’d like to write a teeny, tiny book about Central Perk, the coffee shop in the show. This book would be part of an official box set, which would include the book and a really cool surprise (more on that another time!). Of course I said a huge YES to writing it, and then screamed the house down with excitement!
Since then I’ve been working hard on both projects (which is why I have been absent from the blog!), and now I’m happy to say that they’re both with the publisher. One of them – the teeny book about Central Perk – is at the proof stages, and it looks absolutely fantastic. The other – the A-Z and trivia game – has gone through editing and I should see the proofs very soon. Both projects will be out around autumn next year, but I’ll give you a definite publication date when I have one.
I have been a huge fan of FRIENDS since it premiered in 1994. My husband and I watched every single episode on television, then on video, DVD and of course, the ever-welcome re-runs! We laughed at Ross’s luminous teeth; waved off Chandler when he accidentally moved to Yemen; cheered when Chandler and Monica got together in London; gasped when Rachel discovered she was pregnant; cried when baby Emma was born; sang along to Phoebe’s Smelly Cat; and hoorayed when Rachel got off the plane and ran to Ross’s apartment…
The programme means such a lot to me on a personal level, too because it reminds me of when we bought our first house; of when I was pregnant with my daughter (Ross and Rachel’s baby had been born shortly before); and of trying desperately to get my daughter to sleep before the last ever episode aired in 2004! Happily for us all, our daughter is now a huge fan as well, and we often cheer up a rainy day with a pizza (Joey would be proud!) and a big dollop of FRIENDS.
To say that I’m ecstatic to have written not one but two official FRIENDS products would be an understatement. It truly is a dream-come-true for me and I can’t wait to share more news (and un-boxing videos!), next year.
